Víctor Jara was a Chilean teacher, theatre director, poet, singer-songwriter, and political activist who played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Nueva Canción Chilena (New Chilean Song) movement popularized during the administration of Salvador Allende; Jara was tortured and murdered in the wake of a coup by Augusto Pinochet
