Died: June 1, 1868 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania

James Buchanan was the 15th President of the United States (1857-1861). He is the only president from Pennsylvania and the only president who remained a lifelong bachelor. A moderate Democrat, Buchanan also served in the U.S. House of Representatives, the Senate, Minister to Russia and Secretary of State.

The Civil War erupted within two months of Buchanan’s retirement. Many blamed Buchanan for the war, some even calling it “Buchanan’s War.” Buchanan’s vice president, John Breckinridge, was later expelled from the Senate after he joined the Confederacy.
